About Neighborhood Watch Programs

Neighborhood Watch programs are made up of residents working in partnership with each other and the police to protect and improve the quality of life through by:
  • Becoming familiar with neighbors
  • Observing and reporting criminal or suspicious activity
  • Keeping regular contact with police officers
  • Educating about crime prevention and safety
  • Performing organized communication efforts
  • Problem solving about local issues
Neighborhood Watch programs are not:
  • Citizens pursuing criminals or becoming physically involved in events
  • Groups administering the law by themselves
  • Vigilante groups

Police Role in Neighborhood Watch Programs

The role of police is to provide:
  • Guidance about organization and technical skills
  • Leadership in the form of problem solving and encouragement
  • Support materials and information
  • Training about crime prevention
