1. Where can I plant flowers around a grave?

Flowers may be planted the full length of the headstone and up to 12 inches in front of monument only. No planting is allowed on the sides or back of the monument. Cemetery personnel are not responsible for plant maintenance at graves. If flower beds become unsightly, they may be removed by city staff.

3. Can I let someone else use a grave space that I own?

Yes, a “Consent to Use” form must be filled out, notarized and returned to the Public Service Center office to facilitate this request. It is our recommendation to keep a copy for your records. This form is available by mail or at the City of Marysville, 209 S. Main St. Please contact us at (937) 645-7349.

4. Can I make payments on the lots I want to purchase?

Yes, installments for lot purchases are permitted. An installment contract is signed stating the conditions of the purchase agreement. After an initial down payment, monthly installments are made until paid in full. There is no extra fee or interest charged for this service. See details under the Cemetery Rates of the City Code.

5. Can I use remaining grave spaces on a lot owned by my mother, who is now deceased?

Only the owner of the lot can determine who can use them. If the owner is deceased, ownership (according to law) must first be determined before the lot can be used. A “Consent to Use” form is required if not being used by legal owner. Please contact us at (937) 645-7349 for more information.

6. When I am ready to buy a monument, how do I get a foundation poured for it?

When you decide on your monument, that company will contact our office to order your foundation to be poured. This will provide us with the precise size of the foundation necessary. Typically, foundations are poured in April and October (weather permitting) with deadlines for orders being April 1st and September 15th.

7. Can I plant a tree or shrub on a gravesite?

No trees or shrubs shall be planted on gravesites due to the tree roots, which can be potentially damaging to the graves. Likewise, future interments can cause damage to the trees. All current tree locations have been carefully selected within Oakdale Cemetery.

8. How can I sell my unused grave spaces?

An individual wishing to sell unused spaces may do so by classified ads, word of mouth, or other means allowable by law. The seller must then notify the cemetery office of the sale and provide the name, address, and phone number of the buyer, the lot number and the effective date of the sale. The City will also buy back unused lots at original purchase price less a $20 administrative fee.

9. What determines “resident” in purchasing grave spaces?

"Resident” simply means that you reside within the corporation limits of Marysville at the time of purchase. “Non-resident” rates apply to those outside the corporation limits. Proof of residency will be required to qualify for the reduced rate.

10. Why do I pay more for a lot if I don’t live in the city limits of Marysville?

Residents of Marysville pay city income tax which is used in part for cemetery operations.

11. My parents both want to be cremated. Can the cremains be buried on the same lot?

A single grave space may contain:

• One full-sized vault
  
• One, two or three cremains vaults
  
• One full-sized vault and one or two cremains
  
• One infant vault and one or two cremains

12. Can I place artificial flowers on a grave?

Yes, artificial flowers are welcome when placed within the same boundaries as live flowers. Severely weathered or out-of-season items will be removed by city staff and can be claimed at the cemetery office within four (4) months of removal.

13. Who sets the cemetery rates and rules?

Rules and regulations, including current rates, are determined by the Marysville City Council and adopted as City Code.

14. Why can’t I plant whatever I want on a gravesite since I bought it?

It is for the benefit and protection of all lot owners to enact and enforce certain rules and regulations and to exercise reasonable control over individual lots. In order to maintain uniformity throughout the cemetery, it is necessary to establish and enforce certain rules and regulations.

15. How is the City involved with the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Cemetery?

The City of Marysville provides for the opening and closing of gravesites, the installment of foundations, interments, and disinterment services for Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Cemetery with the following conditions:

• Orders for interments, disinterments, and foundations will follow the same regulations as for Oakdale Cemetery.
  
• The City shall not provide any services on Sunday or holidays.
  
• The City shall be paid the fees as charged by Oakdale Cemetery for any service performed.
  
• Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Cemetery shall be responsible for the collection and payment of all fees owed to the City.
